PRESIDENT TUDJMAN RECEIVES AMBASSADOR GALBRAITH - STATEMENT

ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - President of the Republic of Croatia, Dr. Franjo Tudjman, received the Ambassador of the United States in Zagreb, Peter Galbraith, at his request last night, the President's Office said in a statement. President Tudjman and Ambassador Galbraith considered the situation in Croatia following the liberation of western Slavonia and shelling of Zagreb. On his own and his government's behalf Ambassador Galbraith expressed indignation at terrorist attacks on Croatia's capital, which jeopardized the lives of not only Croatian residents but also US citizens. President Tudjman and the US Ambassador discussed possible future models of presence of the United Nations at the liberated area of western Slavonia. President Tudjman expressed the standpoint that the only acceptable solution to the Republic of Croatia would be the presence of international observers entitled to monitor the exercise of all human and ethnic rights in the liberated territory. At the end of the meeting President Tudjman and Ambassador Galbraith considered the future and ways for conducting peace talks in which US officials should be as efficiently engaged as possible together with European Union representatives, as Croatian President would like, according to the statement.
