ZAGREB, Apr 6 (Hina) - Co-chairman of the Peace Conference on
Former Yugoslavia, Thorvald Stoltenberg, appeared in a Croatian TV
current affairs show last night. He talked about consultations with
Croatian Government and Knin Serb representatives on the
implementation of UNSC Resolution 981.
Asked if Knin Serbs would allow the deployment of observers
along the Croatian borders, Stoltenberg said it would be determined
during consultations.
But there were already some observers at the borders, whose
task was to report on movements in line with Security Council
instructions and the 1992 peace-keeping agreement, he pointed out.
As for panels bearing the inscription 'UNCRO', they would be
displayed at all important points in the occupied Croatian areas,
Stoltenberg said.
It was a matter for the UN forces to decide where they would
put up their notices and was not subject to negotiations, he
specified.
According to Stoltenberg, Knin Serbs did not have to agree to
every aspect of the implementation of the new Resolution and they
would not be asked to sign any new agreement.
The Resolution was passed by the Security Council and that's
that, Stoltenberg said.
Asked if Serbian President Milosevic was closer to recognising
Croatia and/or Bosnia-Herzegovina, Stoltenberg said he could not
say any more than Milosevic already had - namely, that he would
start with recognising Bosnia-Herzegovina, but on the condition
that sanctions be lifted and not only suspended.
