NEW YORK, April 1 (Hina) - In a statement to the United Nations
Italian deputy permanent representative to the UN, Lorenzo
Ferrarin, welcomed the adoption of the three Resolutions, saying
that they "modify the general architecture of the presence" of UN
forces.
Speaking of the UN Confidence Restoration Operation in Croatia
(UNCRO), he said that the resolution "gives the outlines of its
mandate, based on the recent agreement between the Government of
the Republic of Croatia and the United States, and on the statement
issued in Copenhagen by President Tudjman".
Saying that UNCRO - as well as the other two peacekeeping
operations in the former Yugoslavia - could not be an end in
themselves or a final solution, Ferrarin stressed that UNCRO "shall
be an interim arrangement to create the conditions that will
facilitate a comprehensive negotiated settlement consistent with
the territorial integrity of the Republic of Croatia and with the
security and the rights of all its communities".
He added that UNCRO "is not and cannot be seen as an
instrument due to freeze and perpetuate a "de facto" situation
which we consider unacceptable".
