ZAGREB, March 1 (Hina) - Renegade Moslem forces in northwestern
Bosnia were blocking two UNHCR convoys, a UNHCR spokeswoman in
Zagreb said today.
Alemka Lisinski, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees, said that authorities loyal to local businessman Fikret
Abdic denied clearance for the convoys to travel to their
destinations.
One convoy was blocked on its way back to Zagreb after
unloading in Cazin, while the other which was travelling to Cazin
was held up at a Topusko check point in Serb-held Croatia, Lisinski
said.
Drivers and nine convoy trucks were taken to a UN base at
Coralici after the convoy was caught in a crossfire yesterday
between Abdic forces and the Bosnian government army.
Renegade Moslem authorities had said they could not authorize
the movement of the convoys because of fighting, which we doubted,
Lisinski said.
UNHCR officials asked rebel Serb authorities in Knin to allow
the convoys to take an alternative route but said they did not
expect they would be granted clearance.
