KARLOVAC, Feb 8 (Hina) - UN Protection Force and UNCIVIPOL
officials along with representatives of the Croatian Army and the
county commission for civil defence today toured the Karlovac
suburb of Turanj to agree on sanitation measures for the
residential area where refugees from western Bosnia had lived for
four months.
After the return of the refugees to Velika Kladusa the houses
at Turanj were left in a mess. Such conditions posed a serious
health threat with infectious diseases spreading to other Karlovac
suburbs.
The refugees left food leftovers, clothes, and garbage in
disarray all over Turanj.
Because of the danger of infections residents of Turanj could
not return to their homes and begin reconstructing them.
After the UNPROFOR, UNCIVPOL and Croatian officials visited
the suburb, they agreed that the demining of the area should begin
tomorrow.
The removal of garbage and pulling down of wooden huts between
the two bridges would be a next step in the sanitation process,
which could be finished in two months.
