ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on
Monday wished a merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all
Croatian citizens and people of goodwill.
"Dear Croatians at home and abroad,
dear citizens of Croatia,
Among the Croatian people, the Christmas and New Year holidays
have always been filled with the spirit of peace and joy, harmony
and reconciliation, the warmth of a family home.
This year these solemn days have a special meaning - it is the
first year that passed in the atmosphere of peace, reconstruction
and return.
It marked the beginning of the full realization of an
unwavering hope and faith in the prosperous future of safe and
forever independent Croatia.
With this hope, and with a firm belief in its realization, I
would like to express gratitude for everything good that has been
done in this year, with the best wishes for the forthcoming New
Year.
To all Croatian defenders and sufferers, particularly those who
lost their loved ones, and to all invalids and the wounded;
To all returnees, who are back in their homes after long years
of waiting, and to all those who expect their return in the next
year;
To all members of the Croatian armed forces, the Croatian Army,
Navy and Airforce, and the police, who perform their patriotic
duties with honour and self-sacrifice, protecting the state
borders and the safety of citizens;
To all children, Croatian families and pensioners, all young
people, particularly students who prepare for performing the most
responsible tasks, and young athletes who, by cherishing the
sound bodies and minds, spread the reputation of our homeland;
To all Croatian citizens at home who, with their work in
fields, factories and companies, in education, culture and
science, and in the state administration and social and
health services, make efforts in the development and
reconstruction of free and democratic Croatia;
To all Croats round the world whom their homeland eagerly
awaits;
To all Croatian citizens who celebrate this holiday and to
people of goodwill round the world,
I wish a merry and blessed Christmas and a happy New Year,"
Tudjman said in his message.
