IFOR CONSIDERING STEPS TO PREVENT WEST MOSTAR EVICTIONS

SARAJEVO, Dec 10 (Hina) - International representatives in Sarajevo said on Tuesday that apartment evictions in Croat-controlled west Mostar continued despite their protests. Last Saturday a Moslem man was evicted from his west-Mostar apartment by four men in military uniform, UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko told a press conference. Ivanko said that this time local police had conducted an investigation, but added that things had gone too far and that the UN expected Croat authorities to take drastic measures to end expulsions of Moslems and Serbs. This was the 70th eviction in west Mostar since the signing of the Dayton peace agreement a year ago, said Kris Janowski, spokesman for the UN High Commission for Refugees. Spokesman for the NATO-led peace Implementation Force (IFOR) Bratt Boudreau announced military repercussions if it was determined that Croat troops were responsible for expulsions. Senior IFOR and international police officials were considering steps to prevent arbitrary acts by individual soldiers, Boudreau added. He declined to elaborate on those measures.
