BELGRADE, Nov 7 (Hina) - U.S. Assistant Secretary of State John
Shattuck met in Belgrade on Thursday with Serbian President
Slobodan Milosevic and Yugoslav Foreign Minister Milan Milutinovic.
Shattuck told reporters that the aim of his visit was to urge
Yugoslavia to comply with its commitments towards the international
war crimes tribunal in The Hague and to ensure full freedom of the
press.
I have told President Milosevic that Yugoslavia's access to
international financial institutions depends on its fulfilment of
these obligations. This is a new element of the US approach to the
Yugoslav issue, Shattuck said.
Shattuck said his talks with Milutinovic focused on the
problem of the southern province of Kosovo, which has a majority
ethnic Albanian population. He announced that the issue would be
discussed in detail next week when US mediator John Kornblum
visited Belgrade.
