ZPH President Mato Simic informed President Tudjman about a
request by Croatian displaced persons asking that local elections
for the Croatian Danubian area be held on 15 December and that the
mandate of the U.N. Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia
(UNTAES), which expires on 15 January 1997, not be extended.
Simic asked President Tudjman to set up a state committee for
the restoration of Croatian authority in and the return of
displaced persons to the Danubian area.
The Erdut agreement and the agreement on the normalisation of
relations between Croatia and Yugoslavia had created all conditions
for the restoration of Croatian authority in and the return of
displaced persons to the Croatian Danubian area. He added that the
UNTAES mandate in the area had to end on 15 January, 1997.
Today's meeting was also attended by President's Chief-Of-
Staff Ivo Sanader, Parliament Vice President Jadranka Kosor,
President's advisor on interior affairs, Ivic Pasalic and Deputy
Chief-Of-Staff Vesna Skare-Ozbolt.
The ZPH delegation included Tomo Povreslo, Josip Kompanovic,
Mile Hrgovic and Pero Cobankovic, the statement said.
