MOSTAR'S CROAT POLICE HELP RESOLVE EVICTION CASES - E.U. ENVOY

Autor: ;VM;
MOSTAR, Sept 6 (Hina) - The European Union special envoy to Mostar, Martin Garrod, said on Friday that progress had been made over the last week in resolving apartment eviction cases in the Croat-held western part of the town, stressing that it was "very encouraging." Speaking at a press conference, Garrod cited five cases when, thanks to excellent cooperation with Croat police, Moslem and Serb residents had been returned to their flats or their eviction had been prevented. Garrod said that the number of stoning incidents in the Moslem-controlled Donja Mahala district, near Bulevar road which divides the city in Moslem and Croat halves, had decreased in the last few days. He described Saturday's assault by two armed men on a Croat police officer on this road as an ugly incident. Heinrich Parusel of the Western European police force in the town asked Mostar residents for assistance in a search for two men between 30 and 40 years of age suspected of throwing hand grenades on Bulevar or its vicinity on several occasions over the last month while riding in a dark vehicle. Garrod said that he had been visited by one of the six citizens he accused last week of failing to prevent crime and violence in the town. He told me that he was against violence and crime and guaranteed that he would do everything in his power in the fight against violence, Garrod said. Garrod said that the City Council would be temporatily housed in a court building near the Hotel Ero and that this decision was definitive. Mostar mayor Ivan Prskalo had put forward a proposal for the setup of the city administration and a budget for the first three months of its work. Garrod said that the EU administration was studying the proposal. (hina) vm jn 061539 MET sep 96
