ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - The president of the Croatian government
commission for referendums, Krunislav Olujic, held a press
conference in Zagreb on Friday ahead of ten advisory referendums
that would be held in four counties on Sunday.
The government had called referendums to gauge public opinion
on the future territorial setup of local government units.
Olujic said that the referendums would take place at a total
of 1,516 polling stations which would be open from 7 am to 7 pm on
Sunday. The total number of people entitled to vote is 950,051.
Polling committees are required to send the referendum results
to the government commission by June 4 at 19.00 hours.
The referendums will be overseen by the government commission
and the Constitutional Court.
Olujic said that it was very likely that the cost of the
referendums would be lower than 5.5 million kuna (DM 1.5 million),
which was the amount the government had earmarked for their
holding.
Residents of Zagreb County will show whether they want the
City of Zagreb to be separated from the County. If so, the City
would form one territorial unit and its surroundings another.
Residents of the town of Nasice, the municipalities of
Djurdjenovac, Fericanci, Ivanic-Grad, Klostar Ivanic, Kriz and two
municipalities on the island of Pag will say whether they want
their town or municipalities separated from counties to which they
currently belong and included into other counties.
