ZAGREB, Apr 8 (Hina) - The Croatian P.E.N. Centre today criticised
the "recent amendments to the Croatian penal code which limit the
freedom of expression," the Centre said in a statement.
Quoting the International P.E.N. Charter, which binds national
P.E.N. centres to "oppose the curtailing of the freedom of
expression in their country" the Croatian P.E.N. voiced the fear
that the "recent amendments to the Penal Code, passed at the March
session of the House of Representatives, will greatly impinge on
the rights of individuals, particularly journalists, to freely
express their opinions."
Expressing concern over the human and civil rights situation
in the country, the P.E.N. center disassociated itself from its
member Vladimir Seks (deputy president of the House of
Representatives), who voted for the proposed amendments.
The statement was signed by P.E.N. vice-presidents Tonko
Maroevic and Zeljka Corak, secretary-general Vjera Cicin-Sain and
several members. President Slobodan Prosperov Novak gave his
consent by telephone.
