VUKOVAR, 26 Nov (Hina) - The first ship to enter Vukovar port in six
years arrived on Wednesday morning.
The German-registered ship, 'Dunav-expres', carrying equipment
for the UN Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia
(UNTAES), arrived from Yugoslavia.
Before the war, the port of Vukovar on the Danube river handled up to
1.5 million tonnes of cargo. During the Serb aggression, the port
was completely destroyed and its five cranes were stolen, Vukovar
port director Tomislav Latinac said.
In the course of the reconstruction process, the port was partially
rebuilt and two second-hand cranes were purchased with the
financial help of the Belgian government.
Other equipment for the transport of goods should be purchased and
the port warehouses have to be reconstructed, Latinac said, adding
the complete reconstruction would cost 17 million German marks.
