ZAGREB, June 27 (Hina) - Big disproportion in trade in foodstuffs and
farm produce between Croatia and Hungary and possibilities of cutting
down the trade deficit of Croatia were main topics of Croatian Premier
Zlatko Matesa, Agriculture Minister Zlatko Dominikovic and his Hungarian
counterpart Frigyes Nagy who is on a two-day visit to Croatia.
Croatian Minister Dominikovic said that talks were "exceptionally
useful" and that they had considered possibilities of reaching balance
in trade in farm produce between the two countries. Croatia imported far
more food from Hungary than it exported there, and the ratio is thirteen
to one (13:1) in favour of Hungary, Dominikovic added.
In addition, negotiations on reaching a treaty on free trade with
Hungary and bilateral talks as part of Croatia's bid to the World Trade
Organisation (WTO) should be considered in this light. Croatia
justifiably feared that in case of significant liberalisation of trade
between the two countries, on which they were conducting talks, Croatia
might be soon inundated with Hungarian farm produce.
Dominikovic added that they had also discussed concrete projects
aimed at balancing the trade.
The Hungarian Agriculture Minister said that his country was very
interested in restoration of special forms of cooperation with the
agricultural and food processing sector of Croatia.
