The United States remain committed to the Dayton agreements and
support those in Bosnia who are abiding by those agreements, Clinton told
reporters.
Bosnia's Izetbegovic added that his state was faced with obstacles in
implementing the Dayton agreement, especially its civil part.
Asked whether he believed that Bosnia would be able to survive on its
own in a year-and-a-half time, Izetbegovic said that there were four
preconditions for that - the implementation of the civilian aspects of the
Dayton agreement, the 'Equip and Train' program and the arms protocol as
well as Bosnia's admission to NATO's Partnership for Peace program.
The U.S. President confirmed that the U.S. forces would leave Bosnia
by summer, 1998.
Izetbegovic arrived in the United States at the end of last week at
the invitation of the Washington Centre for Democracy, which on Tuesday
presented him with this year's award for democracy. The Centre for Democracy
is a non-profit and non-party organisation, founded in 1984 with the aim of
promoting democracy in the world.
During his visit to the States, President Izetbegovic also met with
the Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Defence Secretary William
Cohen.
