Chairman Jonnattan Shelle told a news conference that the construction
of nine motorways running through Europe had been proposed at a recent
meeting in Prague, and added that five of the motorways would pass through
south-eastern Europe.
Participants of the meeting in Skopje discussed the motorways' routes,
the decision about which will be reached in Brussels near the end of the
month and accepted at a meeting in Helsinki in the middle of this year.
Corridor number V which connects Trieste, Ljubljana, Rijeka, Budapest
and Kiev is especially important for Croatia.
The corridor number X, running north-south suffered a change, to the
benefit of Croatia. The corridor was originally conceived to reach Solun
from Budapest via Belgrade and Skopje. It is now to be added a new
appendage, just as important, which will connect Salzburg, Ljubljana,
Zagreb, Belgrade, Nis and then divides towards Sophia and Solun.
This corridor is also to get a new appendage which connects Croatia
with Budapest via Osijek.
Besides the route through Djevdjelia in Macedonia, an appendage will
be constructed through Prilepe and Bitola towards Greece.
Corridor number VIII connecting Turkey, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania
and Italy is to remain unchanged. Croatia's proposal that the Adriatic
motorway be connected to the corridor was not accepted.
