The Serb leadership had to convince the residents of the
area to take out Croatian documents and vote in the elections,
Hewit said.
Asked about how the local Serb leadership reacted to the
date of elections, Hewit said very well, although there were
divided views, adding that there was enough time to complete
technical preparations, take put documents and register
parties.
Asked whether the current situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina
would reflect on the situation in the Croatian Danubian area,
Hewit said that issues in Bosnia-Herzegovina were separate
from issues in eastern Slavonia.
He added that nothing should stand in the way of the
success of the UNTAES mission.
