OSIJEK, Jan 28 (Hina) - UNTAES's public relations office
issued a statement on Tuesday saying that a group of young men
had thrown stones at the bus and windows of the mobile office
for pension payments in Borovo Selo. (not Borovo Naselje as
had been written before) #L#
The glass doors of the old people's home had been broken
and the bus and its windows had been seriously damaged. The
several Croatian employees who had been in the building at the
time had not been injured and Russian troops had escorted them
to the nearest UNTAES base and then to Vinkovci, the statement
said, stressing that the incident had prevented the payment of
pensions to the local residents. A total of 120 pensions had
been paid by 11.30 hours.
UNTAES utterly condemned such vandalism which only
affected the elderly and persons who needed the most help in
the area, the statement said, adding that in the UNTAES-
controlled area there had been opened four permanent and seven
mobile offices for the payment of pensions where Croatian
employees worked.
Local residents who had become pensioners before 1991
were receiving pensions and documents at the offices.
Pensioners from other areas would also be covered with these
payments, the statement said, adding that so far, over 4,000
payments had been made.
UNTAES planned the offices to continue their work, with
increased protection measures for employees and visitors, the
statement said.
