ZAGREB, 21 Jan (Hina) - Representatives of the Istrian Democratic
Alliance (IDS) in the Croatian Parliament sent five bills on the
ratification of European conventions and charters into regular
parliamentary procedure. #L#
The bills concerned the confirmation of the European
Convention on human rights and freedoms with accompanying
protocols, European Framework Convention on the protection of
national minorities, European Charter on local self-government,
European Charter on regional and minority languages, and European
Framework Convention on trans-border cooperation of communities or
territorial authorities, said IDS representative Damir Kajin.
Having entered the Council of Europe and having accepted a
list of 21 commitments signed by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman
and Parliament President Vlatko Pavletic in March 1996, Croatia
pledged to confirm those conventions within a period of one year.
The secretary of the IDS parliamentary bench, Nenad Klapsic,
added that only the European Framework Convention on trans-border
cooperation was not included in the 21 commitments.
Explaining the IDS initiative, Kajin said that it was time for
Croatia to take over European standards.
