UNTAES was ready to secure the continuation of pension payment
and intervene and disperse people gathered in front of the building
in Borovo Selo, the statement said, adding that the local Serb
leadership had asked to solve the problem themselves and that
pension payment be postponed until tomorrow.
Local authorities condemned the behaviour of the mob, adding
that it was not in the interest of the local community, the UNTAES
statement said.
The payment of pension allowances in Trpinja has been
postponed until Saturday, 1 February. UNTAES said in its statement
that Croatian officials had not been in direct danger and that
UNTAES knew that the attitude of the thugs did not reflect the
attitude of the local leadership and community.
The maintenance of law and order was of special importance,
the statement said, adding that UNTAES would take police measures
against all those who should cause disorder.
