PRISTINA, Oct 30 (Hina) - UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman in Pristina Fernando del Mundo on Friday stated that the situation on Kosovo had improved drastically over the past week. He warned however, that now the greatest problem in the region is the lack of food in the wake of the coming winter. Upon returning to their homes, many refugees are faced with partially or completely destroyed houses. The UNHCR is in the process of assisting them to prepare their homes to be ready for the winter. Instead of roofs, plastic covers are being hoisted. Del Mundo emphasised that the recent battles prevented the local population from sowing crops and as such there is now a food shortage. As all road blocks and check points have virtually been cleared, humanitarian organisations are rapidly conducting food deliveries to the Albanian population. Many refugees are still scattered in the hills adjoining their destroyed villages. It is expected that U.S. Assistant State Secretary Judy Taft will visit Kosovo to personally assess the situation in Kosovo. During her second visit to Kosovo, Taft will meet with political representatives of Kosovo Albanians and with representatives of humanitarian and NGO's. (Hina) sp
