VUKOVAR, Sept 3 (Hina) - Vukovar city officials asked the Croatian
state commission for borders to, during a discussion on borders
between Croatia and Yugoslavia, advocate that islands on the Danube
River, included in Vukovar's cadastre books, remain within the
city's borders.
Vukovar's islands, locally called adas, are currently on 'no man's
Danube', although they had been included in the Vukovar city
cadastre, hence an integral part of Croatia.
If residents of Vukovar wished to sunbathe on the adas during the
summer, they had to register with the interior ministries of both
Croatia and Yugoslavia upon returning to the city.
Most councillors voted for the river islands to be included in the
Vukovar cadastre during a discussion on determining state borders
between Croatia and Yugoslavia.
Five members of the city council, all members of the Independent
Democratic Serb Party (SDSS), including the newly-elected deputy
mayor of Vukovar, Svetislav Ladjarevic, voted against the motion.
