OSIJEK/ALJMAS, Aug 1 (Hina) - The statue of the Virgin Mary of
Aljmas was on Saturday returned to this eastern Croatian town, on
the day when the people of Aljmas had to abandon their homes running
from the Serb aggressor seven years ago.
Several thousand people said farewell to the statue in Osijek where
it has been kept, in exile.
Along with the statue, which was accompanied by police, arrived
many residents of Aljmas, Dalj and Erdut who had been exiled from
their homes in 1991.
Present were also deputy president of the Croatian National
Parliament, Vladimir Seks, President Tudjman's advisor Slobodan
Lang, MP Vice Vukojevic. Osijek-Baranja County prefect Srecko
Lovrincevic, Major-general Branimir Glavas, and county, military
and church officials.
The statue will be placed in a small, recently reconstructed,
chapel, built near the old church which was completely demolished
during the war.
