In response to questions from the press about which protective measures the trade union preferred, Brazzoduro said that vessels should be physically protected by wire or water cannons, they should manoeuvre in order to avoid pirates and merchant ships should sail in convoy or enjoy the protection of navy vessels.
According to the Croatian Seafarers Union's figures, currently 32 ships with 760 crew members aboard are in the hands of pirates.
International security companies charge the protection of the vessel, crew and cargo per trip between 30,000-60,0000 US dollars.
