ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - The Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum from
Jerusalem has awarded "The Righteous Among the Nations" medal and
diploma to the late Stjepan Jankovic, a parish priest from Lukac,
Virovitica.
The president of the Jewish community in Zagreb and head of the
Coordination of Jewish Communities in Croatia, Ognjen Kraus, on
Tuesday handed the award to prelate Ivan Vragovic, who was a parish
priest in Lukac after Jankovic died.
Stjepan Jankovic was awarded the title for trying to save a Jewish
family from Lukac in World War II.
The title "The Righteous Among the Nations" has been awarded to
thousands of people throughout the world who during the Holocaust
helped and protected Jews, risking their own lives and safety.
Around 60 Croats have been awarded the title.
