ZAGREB, April 20 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Prosecutor on Monday
submitted to the State Prosecutor a motion for initiating legal
proceedings against the former commander of the Jasenovac
concentration camp, Dinko Sakic, on suspicion of war crimes.
The motion said there was reasonable cause to believe that Sakic was
guilty of crimes against humanity and international law, having
committed war crimes against civilians, the Prosecutor's Office
said in a statement.
The State Prosecutor's Office passed on the motion to the Supreme
Court, requesting that the Zagreb County Court be appointed as the
venue of the trial.
If the Supreme Court accepts the motion, the competent
investigative magistrate will assess the grounds for suspicion and
order an investigation, the statement said.
After that, the Ministry of Justice will be able to request Sakic's
extradition from Argentina, where he has been living for some
time.
Earlier this month, the Argentinian Government requested the
competent court to issue a warrant for Sakic's arrest. The Croatian
Justice Ministry recently announced it would seek Sakic's
extradition to Croatia.
