OSIJEK, Feb 14 (Hina) - The trust restoration committee of Osijek-
Baranja County Saturday held a meeting which focused on problems
surrounding the return of displaced persons which cannot be solved
on the level of local self-government units.
The meeting was called by County Prefect and committee chairwoman
Anica Horvat, and was attended by the vice president of the National
Committee for the restoration of trust, Ivica Vrkic.
According to Horvat, the two-way return is conditioned by a
prompter renovations of houses and the solving of housing issues of
those who moved into Croat-owned houses.
She warned that Serbs opposed moving out, which heightened the
tension. Horvat was concerned about the arrival of a large number of
displaced persons in spring, as the many housing units with minor
damage in the county were either occupied or devastated.
These were issues to which the Croatian Government and ministries
included in the implementation of the two-way return should give
closer consideration as, Horvat said, neither the Vukovar-Srijem
nor the Osijek-Baranja Counties could solve them and keep peace in
the area by themselves.
A proposal will be forwarded to the National Committee for the
restoration of trust to give wider authority to commissions for
housing and property issues, and to provide appropriate
accommodation for Serbs so that Croat-owned houses may be emptied.
