THE HAGUE, Jan 20 (Hina) - Spokesman for the International Criminal
Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Cristian Chartier on
Tuesday dismissed allegations that there had been several attempts
of assassination on General Tihomir Blaskic who is being tried
before the Tribunal, and that the attempted assassination was one
of the reasons for Blaskic's transferral to a UN detention in
Sheveningen.
Chartier added that before Blaskic's trial began last June, he had
been transferred from a safe house into the detention centre in
Sheveningen, near The Hague, for practical reasons.
Blaskic's defense team Russel Hayman and Anto Nobilo also dismissed
the allegations, claiming that was the first they had heard of
them.
Citing unnamed sources at the Dutch Justice Ministry, world news
agencies on Tuesday reported that there had been several attempts
to assassinate Blaskic, but that is had been prevented.
