Osijek prison offers condolences on Brodarac's death

Autor: mses
OSIJEK, July 13 (Hina) - The administration of the Osijek prison, where the deceased general Djuro Brodarac had been held in custody, offered condolences to his family on Wednesday, saying they were sorry about the general's death and that they had done all they could to ensure that he had normal conditions in that institution.

Prison governor Tomislav Cvitanusic told reporters that Brodarac fell sick at 0740 hrs on Tuesday and was taken by ambulance to the Clinical Hospital Centre at 0805 hrs.

His condition deteriorated overnight and he passed away in the hospital at 0825 hrs, according to a notification which the hospital sent to the prison this morning, Cvitanusic said, adding that the Brodarac family and the Osijek County Court had been immediately notified of his death.

In response to lawyer Petar Sale's comment that his client had been held in inhumane conditions, Cvitanusic said that Brodarac had been offered several times to be alone in a cell, but that Brodarac declined that possibility, saying that the cell in which he was held suited him.

According to the prison governor, there was a fan in that cell as well as a blood pressure gauge and equipment for measuring blood sugar levels.

"Brodarac did not complain about his health. He used his regular medicine in prison just as he did when he was free and we did our best to ensure that he had normal conditions in our institution, and we could not have any influence on what happened," Cvitanusic said.
