Sanader has greed on the simplification of the procedure of his extradition to Croatia, just like his lawyer Goran Suic announced two weeks ago, Sanader's lawyer in Vienna, Werner Suppan, was quoted by the APA Austrian news agency as saying on Monday.
The decision to withdraw the appeal was thus a reason to cancel a hearing on his case before the Salzburg provincial court, scheduled for Tuesday, 21 June. The spokesman for high provincial court in Linz, Guenther Winsauer, said that the hearing was called off.
The exact time for Sanader's extradition from Salzburg to Zagreb has not yet been fixed.
Suppan believes that Sanader will be handed over to Croatia in two to three weeks' time
Sanader has been in extradition custody in Salzburg since his arrest on 10 December 2010. The Croatian judiciary suspects him of abuse of office and powers in several cases. He is charged with having syphoned money from public companies and ministries via the private Fimi Media company. He also allegedly received kickbacks amounting to HRK 3.5 million for the approval of a loan which Hypo Bank gave to the Croatian government while he was Deputy Foreign Minister. The Croatian anti-corruption agency USKOK is also investigating his role in illegal business deals between the state-owned power company HEP and the private Dioki company.
Sanader is also under investigation in Austria on suspicion of money laundering.
The former Croatian premier has claimed he is innocent.
After his arrest in Austria he expressed his opposition to the extradition to Croatia, explaining that he fears that he will not have a fair trial. Two weeks, ago, his lawyer Suic said his client decided to ask for fast-track extradition to Croatia because in recent days his name had been tied with possible negative connotations of Croatia's EU negotiations.
