ZAGREB, Sept 1 (Hina) - The Association of Workers' Trade Unions of
Croatia (URSH) is seeking limiting the number of people on
supervisory and administration boards in state-owned companies,
setting a symbolic compensation for their work, or a cancellation
of the boards because, URSH believes, in their present form they
only represent a form of corrupting political yes-men.
URSH president Boris Kunst told reporters in Zagreb today the
number of people on and composition of supervisory and
administration boards continued to be set to suit the appetites of
political parties. The ruling six-party coalition is pursuing with
the disastrous practice of the former government, he added.
Such politically suitable board members generally know nothing
about the company whose operations they should supervise, but sit
there with the sole task of executing the orders of their parties,
said Kunst.
He pointed out compensation for sitting on the boards was draining
huge amounts of money from the companies.
Kunst also said it was necessary to provide legal frameworks
limiting the number of functions which ministers, their deputies
and assistants, and local self-government officials may perform.
"Amassing functions is unacceptable and immoral, because it makes
some ministers sit on up to 18 supervisory boards," said Kunst,
adding it was the political parties' struggle for predominance in
some companies.
URSH has forwarded its demands in writing to the government and
political parties. Kunst said URSH's signing of a social pact would
greatly depend on the government's answer, and that URSH was
seriously thinking about organising mass union protest rallies in
the autumn. URSH will reconsider only if the government puts a
moratorium on bankruptcies and curbs an announced increase
prices.
