FLORENCE, May 25 (Hina) - Croatia's accession to the Partnership
for Peace was applauded by NATO Secretary-General George Robertson
and U.S. Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, in Florence on
Thursday.
All of us are impressed with significant changes in Croatia and the
Zagreb Government's readiness to reform its internal and foreign
policy, said NATO Secretary General Robertson opening an
extraordinary session of the North Atlantic Council at which
Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino Picula signed a document on his
country's admission to the partnership for Peace.
Accepting the North Atlantic Council's invitation to join the
Partnership for Peace and Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and
with today's signing of the Framework Agreement of the Partnership
for Peace, Croatia is taking a new, promising path towards the
strengthened cooperation with friends who have similar opinions
and partners in the Euro-Atlantic space, Robertson added.
With its admission to the Partnership for Peace, your country has
not joined a military alliance but it thus uses an opportunity for
the practical military and defence cooperation in a sufficiently
flexible frame that suits countries with different security
traditions, he said.
U.S. State Secretary Albright congratulated Picula on Croatia's
entry to this programme of NATO.
I extend my congratulations to Minister Picula and reiterate our
strong support to Croatia's bids to move towards a democratic civil
society, based on the respect of human rights. We believe that
Croatia enjoys all prospects of a promising future when it should be
integrated fully in transatlantic institutions, Albright said.
She voiced satisfaction with the visit of Croatian President and
Premier, Stjepan Mesic and Ivica Racan respectively, to
Washington, scheduled for the beginning of August.
