ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - After the passing of a law on salaries of
state officials, the Croatian National Sabor's House of
Representatives on Thursday passed a law in line with which
salaries of judges and other judiciary officials would be
decreased.
Only representatives of the Croatian Democratic Union voted
against. They proposed that the bill and a conclusion of the
committee for judiciary be forwarded to the third reading.
President of the committee for judiciary Luka Trconic of the
Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) stressed that remarks to the bill
were "mostly of procedural manner, the decrease of salaries of
judges is necessary, and changes will not effect the independence
of judiciary".
In line with the passed law, judges will receive salaries, as well
as other state officials, which will be formed on the basis of the
entire average wage in Croatia in 1999, and not as it was proposed in
a Government's amendment in line with which salaries of state
officials would amount to 85 percent of the average wage in Croatia
in 1999. The average wage in Croatia amounts to DM759.
Vilim Herman of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) said that
the passed law would effect only salaries of senior judiciary
officials while other judges would receive same wage or
insignificantly smaller.
