Mine-suspected areas in Croatia reduced to below 800 square km

Autor: mses
SISAK, June 3 (Hina) - Mine-suspected areas in Croatia have been reduced to 797 square kilometres from an estimated 13,000 square kilometres after the Homeland Defence War in the 1990s, the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR) reported on Friday, adding that mine-suspected areas were marked with 16,000 warning signs.

The HCR said that Croatia was now a safe country and that threats of mines no longer existed on roads, in tourist resorts or around houses or other property.

However, 102 cities, towns and municipalities still suffer from the consequences of mines left over from the war.

Of those mine-suspected areas, forest-covered land accounts for 63 percent, farmland for 25 percent and the Karst and underbrush for 12 percent.
