Bosnian Serb entity withdraws decision on referendum

Autor: mses
SARAJEVO, June 1 (Hina) - Members of parliament of the Bosnian Serb entity on Wednesday decided to withdrew an earlier decision to hold a referendum on decisions on the international community's High Representative in Sarajevo and about the state court and prosecutors.

The withdrawal was moved by the entity's President Milorad Dodik and supported by MPs from the ruling coalition led by Dodik's SNSD party.

Addressing the lawmakers on Tuesday, Dodik said that after an agreement was reached with EU officials "it has been assessed that a referendum is not necessary for now because all the demands of the Republika Srpska have been met."

In early May European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton persuaded the Bosnian Serb leader to scrap plans for the referendum. Ashton and Dodik reached an agreement on the withdrawal of the referendum resolution and the reform of the State Court and the State Attorney's Office after the international administration in the country had threatened to impose sanctions on Republika Srpska as it viewed the referendum as an act of undermining the Dayton peace accords.
