Croatia to eliminate limits for plants producing power from biofuel

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - Croatia is likely to elaborate by the end of June a new tariff system for the production of energy from renewable sources and cogeneration plants which will eliminate the limit of one megawatt for plants producing energy from biogas and biomass. As a result, stronger power plants can be built in Croatia, Croatian Economy Ministry official Darko Horvat said at a German-Croatian conference on biomass energy in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Horvat also announced the adoption of a new law on renewables, adding that a large part of the legislative framework for the development of projects for the generation of power from renewables has already been aligned with the European Union's regulations.

When it comes to its biomass energy strategy, Croatia has set a target of having plants with total power of 85 megawatts by 2010, and biogas plants with the capacity of 2.6 petajoule (PJ).

Today's event in Zagreb brought together several hundred participants who highlighted the importance of biomass energy in the long run.

Huge areas covered by forests, developed agriculture in some of Croatia's regions as well as timber industry offer great opportunities for using biomass in generating power, the conference heard.
