OSIJEK, Feb 9 (Hina) - A delegation of Yugoslavia's northern
province of Vojvodina and the town of Sombor, led by Vojvodina
Assembly president Nenad Canak, on Friday visited Croatia's
eastern town of Osijek, where it held talks about the future
cooperation with representatives of Osijek county and town
authorities and the county chamber of commerce.
Something concrete must be done for people living in the two
regions, especially as regards softening the border regime and
improving traffic of goods and services, Osijek County prefect
Marko Bagaric and Canak said.
Croatia's consul in Subotica, Jasmina Kovacevic, and Osijek
Chamber of Commerce president Zoran Kovacevic spoke about a recent
visit of Osijek business people to Novi Sad and Subotica and
announced a visit of Subotica business people to Osijek for Monday.
In late February, business people from Zagreb are to visit Subotica
and Sombor. In May, Croatian companies will participate in the Novi
Sad Fair and in autumn Vojvodina business people will pay a return
visit to our county and we expect companies to establish contacts on
their own from now on, Kovacevic said.
Vojvodina's Canak said the purpose of the visit was the improvement
of relations between the two countries. One should openly discuss
all issues which could burden those relations, including war
destruction and political obstacles, Canak said.
He said the province's authorities had forwarded the Serbian
government questions about the property of the Vukovar museum and
missing persons as well as that they were still expecting an answer.
Vojvodina still feels the consequences of the isolationist and
national-socialist regime of Slobodan Milosevic and there is no
reason why it should protect his criminal policy, Canak said.
Representatives from Sombor said they had requested competent
authorities in Yugoslavia to reconstruct the railway bridge over
the Danube and restore traffic on the bridge in cooperation with the
Croatian government as there was significant interest in Vojvodina
in establishing economic ties with the Osijek region and accessing
the Euro-region "Danube-Drava-Sava".
