ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - The House of Representatives ended its
Wednesday debate on a bill on the prevention of drug abuse but
postponed the vote on it due to lack of quorum.
The deputies debated on whether there was an alliance between the
drug mob and authorities and if the drug mob had gown stronger
during the rule of the former or current authorities.
Quoting newspaper headlines, Ingrid Anticevic-Marinovic of the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that "a major drug smuggling
chain has been discovered in Croatia," which, she said, some
"(formerly) ruling structures were justifying by the defence of the
country, poisoning their own nation."
Anto Kovacevic of the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU)
reacted to this asking Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) deputies
"not to keep silent but answer to this claim." Kovacevic wondered
"if anyone in the state has been held accountable for the alliance
between the drug mob and authorities, and if such a group exists."
Kovacevic was left without an answer and SDP's Romano Mestrovic
said the drug mob was not the only mob in Croatia, "the mob exists in
general," and it "has infected all roots of society: politics,
police, army, economy and even sport."
According to Mestrovic, the mob is present everywhere in Croatian
society. The former authorities tolerated it while the current ones
are not doing enough to stop it, he added.
HDZ's Ivan Penic dismissed the claim, adding the problem of drug
abuse "escalated terribly" exactly last year, while the current
authorities were in power.
