ZAGREB, Jan 29 (Hina) - Bavaria's Minister of Economy, Transport
and Technology Otto Wiesheu, who met Croatia's Economy Minister
Goranko Fizulic in Zagreb on Monday, warned about the need to remove
administrative obstacles to foreign investments, the Economy
Ministry said a statement.
The laws are good but their implementation is problematic and said
obstacles are overcome easier by large companies than by small and
medium businesses, Wiesheu said.
The Bavarian official expressed Bavaria's readiness to invest in
Croatia saying German companies appreciated Croatian workers who
were known for being reliable.
Fizulic said his ministry would do all it could to facilitate
foreign investments, including Bavaria's. He announced the
establishment of an information desk where foreign investors would
be able to obtain information on investment possibilities in
Croatia. He also announced a presentation of Croatian economy in
Frankfurt on March 12.
"The Croatian government has done much for the improvement of the
economic situation. The main problem is high unemployment, which
can be resolved only by increasing exports, which are the result of
increased foreign investments," Fizulic said. He added foreign
investors were very interested in the privatisation of public
companies as well as in trade and tourism but not in 'greenfield'
investments. Croatia lacks production investments, Fizulic said
pointing to the problem of textile industry, which he said faced
collapse without investments.
German Ambassador Gebhardt Weiss, who attended the meeting, said
there was an interest in improving relations between the two
countries. Investment conditions in Croatia have to improve by
spring at the latest due to competition in Hungary, Slovenia, the
Czech Republic but also Yugoslavia, Weiss said.
A forum on trade between Bavaria and Croatia, to focus on the
possibility of greater presence of Bavarian companies in Croatia,
especially in the field of infrastructure, will be held in Munich on
February 15 and 16, the Ministry said in the statement.
