ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's House of Representatives on Wednesday evening wrapped up a discussion on draft amendments to the defence law, under which the period for conscripts to serve a military service will be
cut from 10 to six months, whereas the civilian service will be lessened from 15 to eight months. The lower house, however, did not vote on it this evening owing to a lack of quorum. The decrease in the period will not lessen the defence ability of Croatia, Defence Minister Jozo Rados told MPs explaining the bill. Such a move will also save 142 million kuna annually, he added. ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's House of
Representatives on Wednesday evening wrapped up a discussion on
draft amendments to the defence law, under which the period for
conscripts to serve a military service will be cut from 10 to six
months, whereas the civilian service will be lessened from 15 to
eight months.
The lower house, however, did not vote on it this evening owing to a
lack of quorum.
The decrease in the period will not lessen the defence ability of
Croatia, Defence Minister Jozo Rados told MPs explaining the bill.
Such a move will also save 142 million kuna annually, he added.
During the debate, on behalf of the bench of the strongest
opposition party (HDZ), Vladimir Seks said he did not oppose the
proposal but wondered whether six months would be sufficient for
conscripts to gain the basic knowledge in the military science and
skills.
Miroslav Korenika of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) replied that
conscripts could learn all what was necessary in a few months and
after that they wasted their time in military barracks.
The House of Representatives ended its work for Wednesday and will
convene on Thursday morning.
