ZAGREB, Oct 16 (Hina) - The Austrian Reconciliation Fund has to date
paid some EUR1.5 million in damages to Croatian citizens who were
forced and hard labour in Nazi camps, the Fund's Secretary-General,
Ambassador Richard Wotava, said on Wednesday. #L#
To date, 627 Croatian requests have been cleared and about EUR1.5
million paid out, while some 700 requests are being processed,
Wotava told reporters. The Austrian fund believes there are other
people in Croatia who are entitled to the damages but are unaware of
this possibility, he said.
The Austrian Reconciliation Fund was set up in 2000 to pay out
damages for suffering during the Nazi rule. Wotava said the damages
were "voluntary and symbolic" as no money could compensate for the
suffering those people had gone through.
