Ambassador Granit spoke at President Mesic's request about his
country's stand as to what had prompted the Israeli military
operation in the area under the Palestinian Authority, and its
course and effects to date.
Granit said that the operation was undertaken as a response to a
series of attacks by suicide bombers, for which he said there was
unambiguous evidence that they were financed by the Palestinian
Authority.
The Israeli authorities believe that the operation had achieved the
desired goal - the arrest of wanted terrorists and the destruction
of plants for the production of weapons and equipment used by
bombers.
Israel wants to renew contacts with the Palestinian side with the
help of Arab countries as soon as possible, he added.
The two officials agreed that relations between Israel and Croatia
were developing in a favourable direction.
The Israeli ambassador today also met with Foreign Minister Tonino
Picula, First Deputy Prime Minister Drazen Budisa, and Deputy Prime
Minister Slavko Linic.
