As part of a computer education programme for young Romany, being
conducted by the "Romany for the Romany of Croatia" association,
Ambassador Jarrold handed over five personal computers equipped
with modems and two printers.
The president of the association, Bajro Bajric, and Cakovec mayor
Branko Salamon thanked the ambassador for this very valuable
donation. Bajric stressed that there is no segregation of the
Romany in Medimurje.
About six thousand Romany live in Medimurje. Bajric claimed that
often the media pay too much attention to incorrect statements by
certain individuals in the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human
Rights or deputy ombudsman Marta Vidakovic-Mujkic about apparent
discrimination against the Romany in Medimurje. These officials
live in Zagreb and do not know what the true situation in Medimurje
is, Bajric claimed.
