ZAGREB, Dec 4 (Hina) - Zdenka Cuhnil, the MP representing the ethnic
Czech and Slovak minorities in the Croatian parliament, has stated
that an article published in the Vecernji List daily on Monday,
which quoted Cuhnil as saying that she would not support the
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) government but the Social
Democrats (SDP), is "false and untrue". #L#
Cuhnil on Thursday said she had not talked to the daily about her
possible support to the government led by HDZ president Ivo
Sanader.
"The only statement I made in this regard was one made on 27 November
in the (Croatian Television) 'Prizma' programe, when I said that 'I
have enough time to think for whom I will cast my vote. I will wait
for the position of the HSS and I will take into account opinions of
my voters, the Czechs and Slovaks'," Cuhnil wrote in her
statement.
Cuhnil is also a member of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS).
An association of ethnic Slovaks ('Matica Slovacka') yesterday
responded to the Vecernji List article, saying that it distanced
itself from Cuhnil's alleged position. It also said that "Cuhnil
had not been given a mandate from Croatian Slovaks" for such a
statement and that a majority of Slovaks supported the HDZ.
