ZAGREB, Dec 3 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on
Wednesday said that the design and editing of an article in Jutarnji
List daily about the purchase of Libyan oil by the national oil
company INA was "sheer impudence", "rubbish" and "in the service of
somebody's policy". #L#
Today's Jutarnji List brings on its cover page and in an article
headlined "Secret Commission of US$240,000 for Import of Qaddafi's
Oil" photos showing Mesic and Libyan President Muammar al-Qaddafi
during Mesic's visit to Libya last summer.
"This has nothing to do with common sense. This is in the function of
somebody's policy, I do not know whose policy the owners and editors
of Jutarnji List are endorsing, but this is sheer impudence," Mesic
told reporters during a visit to a new factory of Eurocable Group.
He said that during his visit to Libya he discussed the involvement
of Croatian companies in business ventures in that country.
"I cannot negotiate any business venture or commerce. That is not
part of my job," Mesic said.
It is stated on the cover page and in the article, which include
photos showing President Mesic and members of a state delegation
accompanying him on his visit during talks with al-Qaddafi, that
the purchase of oil in Libya was agreed on by the delegation headed
by Mesic.
The daily reports that although the purchase of oil was agreed on by
the two state delegations, INA paid commission to Sadik Colovic, a
representative of Austria's Lina Petroleum, which it says is
completely unknown to domestic oil circles.
