Nothing else can be drawn out of this except that this is a form of
pressure on the HSS to change its decision, spokeswoman for the
party Mirjana Petir said, stressing that the HSS would stick to its
decision to discuss possible coalitions only after the election and
that it would search for partners only among those parties with
similar programmes.
Tomcic received the first threatening letter, sent from Zagreb, at
his home address on November 17. The letter was signed by the Centre
for the Defence from Communisam in the Republic of Croatia.
Tomcic is threatened that, should he form a coalition with the
communists (Ivica Racan and his Social Democratic Party) he and the
closest member of his family would be executed within 24 hours.
The second letter, which Tomcic received today, was sent from the
eastern Croatian town of Popovaca. The letter says that should the
HSS enter a coalition with Racan, Tomcic would know how it felt to
lose those who were dearest to him. The hand-written letter was
signed by "desperate Spring Movement activists and other
humiliated Croatians".
