The central ceremony was held two days before the actual date of
Navy Day, which is observed on September 18, because the Navy is
currently participating in a NATO military exercise which lasts
until September 19.
"We remember all those who gave their lives throughout the history
of the Croatian Navy, particularly during the anti-fascist
struggle (in World War Two) and the Homeland War. (...) They
contributed to the organisation and development of our Navy,"
Deputy Defence Minister Zlatko Gareljic said.
Gareljic said he was proud of the Croatian Navy's contribution to
safety at sea and peace in the region through NATO's Partnership for
Peace programme.
General Josip Lucic, armed forces chief of staff and envoy of the
supreme commander, President Stjepan Mesic, expressed gratitude to
everyone "who made our survival possible through their work,
struggle, wisdom, patience and love".
Navy Commander Rear Admiral Zdravko Kardum said the task of the Navy
was to make its contribution to the international community by
making the Adriatic "a safe sea and a sea of friendship and
understanding," but also to protect Croatian national interests.
