prevention, Ante Barbir. #L#
Racan declined to comment on the case of Barbir, against whom the
Split County prosecutor's office filed an investigation request
yesterday.
"The investigation is underway and it is not up to the executive
authority or government members to make assessments of this phase
of the proceedings," Racan told reporters in the government
building.
Barbir asked Racan today to relieve him of duty as head of the
government office for drug abuse prevention pending completion of
proceedings which see him accused of abuse of office.
In his statement today, Barbir explained he believed the
resignation was the moral and professional thing to do in order to
keep proceedings objective and not to diminish the results achieved
in drug abuse prevention since, he said, the proceedings harmed the
office and government.
The Office of the Split County Prosecutor on Tuesday filed a request
for investigation of Barbir, the head of the Service for the
Prevention of Drug Addiction in the city of Split, Vedran Mardesic,
and the president of the "Help" association, Mario Puljiz.
The three men are accused of the illegal use of funds allocated by
the government office and the Split city government to the "Help"
association for fighting drug abuse.
