"I feel responsible for the situation in the shipyard. Just as I am
responsible for its successes, I am also responsible for its
business failures," Vrhovnik wrote in a letter to the chairman of
the ailing company's Supervisory Board and the majority owner,
Giancarlo Zacchelo.
Vrhovnik said he would step down in order to avoid "groundless
insinuations that might connect the government' support to the
shipyard with his personal relations with government members and
his party membership".
He said his poor health would make it impossible for him to be fully
engaged in the shipyard's business.
Creditor banks and principal shareholders have agreed on the
financial restructuring and injection of fresh capital and have
signed documents on terms of further financing, he said.
"After that the shipyard should be financially stable and sound
again," the Vrhovnik said, adding that "talks with suppliers and
subcontractors are under way" and "I am confident that they will be
completed successfully."
Vrhovnik recalled that the shipyard had agreed business deals worth
about US$35 million and that it would soon arrange new projects
worth about $40 million.
