On 27 April 1999, Serbian forces killed a few dozen villagers in
Meja near the town of Djakovica, and subsequently transferred and
buried the bodies at Batajnica, outside Belgrade, in order to cover
up the crime. Last week, Serbian authorities handed over the
remains of the victims to the UN Mission in Kosovo.
During the funeral, Djakovica Mayor Aqif Shehu said the massacre in
Meja had shaken the civilised world, and he called on the
international community to exert strong pressure on Belgrade so as
to help shed more light on the whereabouts of a few thousand missing
Kosovans.
